Special Card Games

Tarot cards

Most playing cards used in card games have traditional uses. But there are some cards that are used for unusual purposes. One example for this is the controversial “Tarot Cards” game, although it is extremely popular.
Basically Tarot cards, which originated about 500 years ago, is just a special deck of cards, which the Italians used to play a card game called ‘Tarocchi’ or Triumphs. In later times, Tarot cards started being associated with the occult being used as a tool for divination. Some people play this game to enhance their intuitiveness.
A deck of Tarot cards numbering 78 is divided into two groups: 56 Minor Arcana or pip cards and 22 Major Arcana or trump cards.
The Minor arcana have to do with the practical ups and downs in the activities in our daily lives. Just like the standard playing cards, the minor arcana in the Tarot deck has four suits. But instead of spades, hearts, diamonds and clubs, the Tarot suits are wands, swords, cups and pentacles. Within these suits, the cards are numbered from one to 10 and also include the court cards comprising of the king, queen, knight and page.
On the other hand, the Major Arcana are picture cards related to ideals, principles and concepts. They are numbered from one to 21. The 22nd card, which is the Fool, is numbered zero. The Major Arcana cards relate with the major aspects of life.
When it comes to the reading of Tarot cards, if you get a major arcana card about one subject in one reading, and a minor arcana card about the same subject in the next reading this would mean that the importance of this subject has diminished in your life.
Just like any other card games, the person who wants the reading shuffles the Tarot card deck. This person is asked to concentrate on the particular question or area in which they want the answers while shuffling the deck. After this, the deck is cut and the reader arranges the cards in a pattern called, spread. Here each card in the spread has a meaning. A spread can have just one card or all the 78 cards in the deck! This is the choice of the reader or the kind of question being asked.

After the cards are arranged in the spread, the meanings are interpreted depending on their positions in relation to the cards around them.
Fortunetellers usually interpret Tarot cards, although in today’s world a deck of these cards can be bought along with clear instructions on how to use it.

  1. Overall it’s a pretty good article. It is factual and it does point out that the cards were orginally used by Italians for a card game. I think the article should have also mentioned that playing a real card game with tarot is still practiced today where it is especially popular in France now. There’s an official French Federation of Tarot for tournament play. If this article is aimed at people who play card games, I think it should have given more space to game playing uses of the cards like “tarocchi” which is still done in places such as France. We already know people practice divination with tarot. I think card game players especially Americans who only see the fortune telling tarot would be interested to know that gaming is still being done today with those cards.
