Default Southwest Texas

South West Texas…..
The Chihuahuan Desert and the Santiago Mountains…… The hot desert winds blow for days at a time (20-25 MPH) Everything dries within seconds of contact with the wind. Have gone through scads of skin lotion. Temperatures hit 100 in the daytime and drop to 30 and below at night. Stayed at Stillwell Ranch which was run by the children of Hallie Stillwell whose husband established the ranch in 1902 and, along with his wife, worked the 22,000 acres till he died in 1946. When the young bride ( Hallie) arrived at the ranch in 1918 it was necessary to keep a rifle in all four corners of the one room adobe house for protection from Mexican bandits and marauding Indians. Hallie didn’t bat an eye. She adapted quickly and became a rancher. She was 90 years old before she turned the ranch over to her children. She had earned so many accolades during her ranching life that, when she died in 1994 at age 96, a lengthy obituary ran in the New York Times.

We’ve gotten a glimpse into a rather unique marriage between mountains and desert, with a river thrown in for good measure. The Santiago Mountains are situated in the Chihuahuan Desert with the Rio Grande River cutting a swath through the middle. This unusual union has produced an ecosystem where Cottonwood, Willow trees and Beavers…….. Evergreen, Arizona Pine, Cypress, small Oak and Whitetailed Deer exist side by side with a seemingly endless variety of Cactus, Creosotebushes and Jackrabbits. Definitely an interesting example of very diverse species adapting to one another and thriving together.
Oh, and about that river…. While we were exploring a remote stretch of the Rio Grande the cool water looked very inviting, so it occurred to me ( as these things sometimes do) that it might be fun to see if I could slip across the border. Picking a spot where some rapids indicated shallow water, I carefully waded into calf high water and started across. About halfway over, when I was feeling quite pleased with myself, the current of “The Wild and Scenic River,” as they call it here, declared itself boss. It yanked my legs out from under me and dumped me clumsily on my backside. And so, I am now officially a “Wetback”
