Default Alabama - Texas East Coast

Alabama-2002

Not much to report since we have not really begun the new portion of the trip yet. We spent a week in Mobile Alabama, and explored the gulf Coast beaches. They were reminiscent of Asbury Park in the 50s. Even had what appeared to be the original Kiddie rides from Asbury. There are some interesting Historic sites and museums in Mobile. They currently have a big exhibit from China. Mobile, though, is much like many of the cities we have visited, a city trying to return to past glory. When you leave the few cities Alabama seems to be defined by very small towns in worse economic shape than the cities. A lot of Pawn Shops and Dollar Stores. We are now in Lafayette La. where we will enjoy a Cajun Restaurant and Dance Hall where we had fun last year. Then it’s on to Houston Texas where we begin our next adventure. Oh yes, and the new Chariot is awesome.
East Texas, 2002
Three lane highways sandwiched between dual lane roads, all bounded by open land as far as the eye can see. The skyline broken only by cell towers and the occasional gas station. Many trucks, cars, busses and of course, RVs, most exceeding the 70 MPH limit, all going-----who knows where?
Houston---
Houston is larger than life and a far cry from the many cities that are rebuilding. A lot of rebuilding going on but of a different sort. In anticipation of Super Bowl 2004they are replacing all underground water mains and whatever else is under there and then installing all new decorative sidewalks. The many highrise buildings are all unique and blend and contrast well with the old historic ones that are restored and well maintained. Older downtown hotels have been restored and converted to apartments with many luxurious amenities.
In spite of abundant traffic ( car and pedestrian) there is ample parking and the cities system of tunnels connecting the many corporate office buildings provides stores and restaurants ( in air conditioned comfort) to meet the needs of the multitudes. Great way to reduce any appearance of overcrowding.
Excellent museum district, eight or nine wonderful museums within easy access to each other.
Every kind of restaurant imaginable. Much like NYC in this respect, though the city lacks the personal neighborhood feeling of New York.
I know no one will believe this but I actually went to a restaurant with plenty of beef on the menu and ordered a vegetable plate!!!! Five different veggies and all delicious. Will wonders never cease?
Texas Gulf Coast---
Galveston Island----Campsite right on the beach—shorebirds for daily enjoyment—the gulf hidden in fog—walking on the beach—friendly folks—excellent meals and entertainment at Joes’ Crab Shack—Yes, they do have good beef too.
